PREP GIRLS’ TENNIS PREVIEW: Bellingham Red Raiders

Coach: Steve Chronister

Last year: Finished second in the Northwest Conference with a 7-1 record and finished 14-2 overall.

Players to watch: Ellie Iwersen (so.); Mariah Miller (sr.); Oriana LoCicero (jr.); Ruby Parker (sr.); Olivia Bjorklund (sr.);

Outlook: Coach Steve Chronister couldn’t say enough positives about his group of tennis players this spring. He has a hard-working team and a talented one, too. “I mean, they just get after it,” Chronister said in a phone interview, “and so it’s been a lot of fun. I think all of our kids play the way we want them to play and know how to win.” The Red Raiders graduated a few talented players but return a good portion of last year’s varsity squad. Ellie Iwersen, who was the state alternate as a freshman last spring, is expected to be Bellingham’s top singles player. Seniors Mariah Miller and Ruby Parker and junior Oriana LoCicero give Chronister three other quality varsity players who should mostly play singles but are versatile enough to chip in at doubles. The Red Raiders’ JV team last season went 16-0, and several of those girls will get a taste of playing on the varsity stage. Katie Kales, Marle Knowles, Anna Crowley, Sophia Lawrence and Alice Heibert all are expected to be strong contributors. “Sehome is a great group,” Chronister said. “They are the clear favorites, but we are pretty good. ... I get to coach some of the best kids in the school. Sometimes I pinch myself because I get to coach this group of girls.”
