Sehome opens season with a sweep of Ferndale

Despite some first-match jitters, the Sehome girls’ tennis team settled down and opened defense of its Class 2A state title from last spring with a 7-0 victory over Ferndale on Tuesday, March 17.

“All the kids played well from top to bottom,” Mariners coach Bonna Giller said in a phone interview. “The scores were consistannt, and so was the play.”

Andrea Clawson and Lauren Smith each only dropped one game at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, while Simone Hall grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and Sidney Blafour won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4. Madison and Taylor Harris won without dropping a set at No. 1 doubles, as did Ali Morrow and Andrea Zucchi at No. 2 doubles, while Mia Zucchi and Hailey Holland won 6-1, 6-0.

Sehome travels to Burlington-Edison on Thursday, March 19, while Ferndale will be at Squalicum.
