Lynden suffered a 6-1 season-opening loss to Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday, March 17, at Sedro-Woolley.
The Lions win came from Emily Corbin at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 7-5 over Emily Peterson. Corbin had to work to finish off the match, coach Trey Ballard said.
“Emily came back in the final set from down 4-5,” the Lynden coach said in a phone interview. “The other girl made some adjustments and I think (Corbin) got tired toward the end, so she didn’t want to go a third set and just mentally decided she wouldn’t lose.”
Abbi Steele also earned a win at No. 2 singles, but it counted as a loss for the Lions since she is from Nooksack Valley. She cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win and made some adjustments Ballard asked her to work on, he said.
Lynden has another match at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the Lynden YMCA against Anacortes.
