Mount Baker girls’ wrestler Natalie Smith earned some recognition for her success at Mat Classic XXVII on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 20-21, at the Tacoma Dome.
The Mountaineers’ junior was named a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Athlete of the Week after earning pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Mat Classic to reach the championship match at the 120-pound weight class.
Smith was the only Mountaineer to make the championship round, but she fell to the defending state champion Puyallup’s Jordyn Bartelson 5-3 in the final round.
Smith’s efforts helped her team to a second-place finish, only half a point behind Grandview.
