Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley split matches that were not forfeited by either team as the Pioneers won 53-24 in a boys’ wrestling match on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Mount Baker.
The Mountaineers’ Jerimiah Cronk earned a pin against Taylor Gardner in 3 minutes, 46 seconds in the 152-pound weight class, one of the more dramatic matches of the night between two familiar opponents.
“Taylor is a pretty good wrestler, and Jerimiah wrestled up a weight class to have a competitive match with him and it went his way,” Mount Baker coach Roger Goodwin said in a phone interview. “They’ve wrestled in the past, and Taylor has beat him, but Jerimiah is figuring it out, stepping up to a new level this year. He maintained good position and control. There were two takedowns in the match, and he was able to escape when he was on bottom and capitalized on good position.”
Other Baker wins came from JT Keeney (195 pounds) and Jesus Torrero (126).
Nooksack Valley earned wins from Alex McLauren (145 pounds), Gabe Forsee (160) and Tyson Mergel (285).
Mount Baker takes part in the Washington High School Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Washington High School in Tacoma. Nooksack Valley is off until the Class 1A Sub-Regional on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Mount Baker.
