Blaine’s boys’ wrestling team took a 53-15 win over Bellingham thanks to a pair of close wins Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Blaine High School.
The closest match was at 132 pounds, where the Borderites’ Gage Lott won 7-5 in overtime over Sergio Torres.
“They’re both two-time state veterans. They wrestled to a 5-5 tie, and overtime a takedown won it,” Blaine coach Craig Foster said in a phone interview. “That was the match of the night. He got behind and stayed with it, kept wrestling hard, coming back and it ended up being tied. He didn’t get down which was behind.”
Foster acknowledged that match-up could be a potential Sub-Regional preview, but was unsure if either would be moving up or down in weight before then.

Another close match was Brendan Schmidt’s 9-8 win over Bellingham’s James Langen at 145 pounds.
“Schmidt is a senior who isn’t normally on varsity because we’re just so strong through the middle weights,” Foster said. “He got behind 5-0, but like Gage he kept going and won 9-8. We really like that because we tell our guys it’s not over until the whistle blows. He hung in there and kept getting points. That was nice for him on senior night when he’s not normally in the lineup.”
On Bellingham’s side, Blair Bennett’s quick 46-second pin of Tristan Alanis was a Red Raider highlight.
“Blair Bennett looks tough,” Foster said. “He’s a state-level wrestler and he had a good quick pin.”
Both Bellingham and Blaine are off until the Class 2A Sub-Regional Tournament on Friday, Feb. 6, at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
