Bellingham wins the Battle of the Boot

The Bellingham boys’ wrestling team came out on top in the Battle of the Boot Tournament with rival schools Sehome and Squalicum on Friday, Jan. 23, at Bellingham High School.

The Red Raiders tied with the Mariners in points, 39-39, but won the tiebreaker due to the H criteria, which rules that the team who scored the most points in the first round wins. Bellingham outscored Sehome 10-6 in that first round, Bellingham coach Tom Hinz said in a phone interview.

Bellingham defeated Squalicum by a score of 45-30, clinching the tournament victory.

Bellingham’s Riley Takemura (126 pounds) defeated Sehome’s Aiden VanBrink 6-2.

“That was a great match,” Hinz said. “Aiden wrestled well against a three-time state participant in Riley.”

The big match for Bellingham came from James Langen (145) pinning Jackson Schroyer.

“If (James) didn’t do it, we wouldn’t have won. We needed James to pin,” Hinz said.

Sergio Torres (132) and Alden Roberts (152) were other wrestlers for Bellingham Hinz said stood out throughout the tournament.

Sehome defeated Squalicum 39-31 in the dual between the two teams in the tournament.

Bellingham, Sehome and Squalicum all wrestle next at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Lynden Tournament at Lynden High School.
