Mount Baker defeats Burlington-Edison 56-18

Mount Baker’s girls’ wrestling team defeated Burlington-Edison 56-18 on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Mount Baker High School.

The Mountaineers’ Michelle Mata (105-pound weight class) earned a pin in the second round, Korbyn Cadle (120) pinned in the first round, Jessica Mata (135) pinned in the second round, Taylor Van Brocklin (145) pinned in the second round, Aniecea Camacho (170) pinned in the first round and Akemi Schwinden (235) pinned in the second round.

“Jessica Mata wrestled up a weight class. She came out and was aggressive,” Mount Baker coach Clyde Blockley said in a phone interview. “The girls are starting to pick up the tempo and getting ready for postseason.”

Natalie Smith (125) was another wrestler Blockley said stood out, as he said her wrestling is a lot more fluid now.

The Mountaineers’ will wrestle next at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Greater Puget Sound Tournament at Foss High School.
