Squalicum’s Wilson Dierdorff had a state-qualifying dive score of 351.95 on a 12.6 degree of difficulty at the Northwest District diving meet on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.
“He dove consistently through his hard dives,” Rhonda Flatz-Stouder, diving coach for the Bellingham schools, said in a phone interview. “I was pleased with all the divers getting into their more difficult dives. The fact that they are doing them this early gives us the opportunity to practice them more.”
Dierdorff’s score was good for second in the meet. His teammate Griffen Korby scored a 296.65 on a 12.5 degree of difficulty to take third.
“Griffen missed two dives, otherwise he would have qualified,” Flatz-Stouder said. “I think I have potentially five divers who could go to state this year, and they’re all freshmen or sophomores, all very hard-working and talented.”
Another Squalicum diver, Gabriel Kromkoff, took fourth with 289.50. Bellingham’s Koa Hanks (258.10 points) and Brennan Drew (245.15) took fifth and sixth, respectively.
Daren McCune, from Bellingham, also participated and scored 91.25.
The next district dive meet is at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.
