Sehome’s boys’ swimming team had four swimmers with state-qualifying times in the 500 freestyle in a 113-57 win over Burlington-Edison on Thursday, Jan. 15, at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.
Zach Shenkin won the 500 free with a time of 4 minutes, 57.63 seconds for the Mariners. Also qualifying were Colin Hakeman (5:03.67), Rudi Berry (5:11.16) and Sam Hunter (5:13.67).
“The 500 free was really the standout group,” Sehome coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. “It was a really exciting race. All four of them were racing each other the whole way. Our whole philosophy is swimming fast when we’re tired and they’re accepting that. They’re doing a lot of swimming and working hard. We didn’t rest for this meet and they still did great.”
The 200 medley relay team of Shenkin, Joseph Adams, Isaiah Grambo and Josh Larson also dropped their state-qualifying time by more than a second to 1:44.16. That time moved them up to first in the state, Helling said.
Grambo dropped his 100 butterfly state-qualifying time to 55.88.
Sehome is back in action at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center against Bellingham.
