Mountaineers earn four pins in win over Lynden

Mount Baker’s girls’ wrestling team scored four wins by pin over Lynden in a 54-24 win Thursday, Jan. 15, at Mount Baker.

Michelle Mata’s pin of Krystal Cruz was the Mountaineers’ highlight.

“(Michelle) was just aggressive,” Mount Baker coach Clyde Blockley said in a phone interview. “They wrestled for the first time last week and Michelle dominated her, pinned her in the third round. This week she pinned her in the second round. She’s starting to believe in herself more each match.”

Jessica Mata (135), Taylor Van Brocklin (140) and Rachel Nichols (145) also won by pin for Baker.

Lynden got its only win by pin from Emily Gallegos (110 pounds).

Mount Baker wrestles next at the Othello Girls’ Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, in Othello. Lynden will take part in the Burlington-Edison Women’s Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Burlington-Edison.
