Storm top Red Raiders in tight contest

Squalicum’s boys’ wrestling defeated Bellingham 38-36 on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Squalicum High School.

“Going into it, I knew it was going to be close, they have more depth in the junior and senior classes than we do,” Squalicum coach Russell Robinson said in a phone interview.

The Storms’ Zachary Wallace (145) pinned James Langen in 1:26, Zach Johnson (120) defeated Simeon Murphy 10-1, Jonathan Vavalza (106) pinned Indy Casas in 2:58 and Jace Cooper (113) pinned Dewald Olivier in 3:55.

“Zachary went out and got the quickest pin of the night, Zach wrestled a tough match and got the major for us,” Robinson said. “My little guys Jonny and Jace got it done tonight. It was a total team effort in the match.”

Squalicum and Bellingham will both wrestle next at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, in the Northwest Conference Tournament at Sehome.
