Ferndale’s boys’ wrestling team placed fifth with 105 points and had seven placers in the Panther Classic Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10, at Snohomish High School.
The Golden Eagles’ Biscuits Graves placed third at the 106 weight class. Ben Brosselle (160) placed second after losing due to a technical fall in the championship match and Patrick Condon (220) placed third.
Blaine placed 12th with 70 points, who had four medalists. Lynden placed 15th with 42 points, finishing with three medalists.
The Borderites’ Caleb Frey placed first at the 145 weight class, defeating his opponent 8-0 in the championship match. Gage Lott (132) placed third after winning an 8-4 decision, Garrison Folk (113) placed fourth after losing by pin and Colton Economy (120) placed fourth after losing 2-0 in sudden death overtime.
“Caleb Frey only gave up two points in four matches at the tournament, he has been dominant the last couple tournaments,” Blaine coach Craig Foster said in a phone interview.
The Lions’ Primitivo Cruz placed third at the 113 weight class by pinning his opponent in the third-place match. Payton Peterson-Scotter placed fifth and Brody Weinheimer (182) placed third with a 6-1 victory in the third-place match.
“As a whole we are young but I thought we wrestled well. Mistakes from being young definitely showed but we wrestled well,” Lynden coach Alan Moore said in a phone interview.
Cruz pinned his opponent in back-to-back matches en route to a third place finish, Moore said when asked what stood out for the team in the meet.
Lynden wrestles next against Sehome at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Lynden duals. Ferndale will wrestle Blaine next at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Blaine.
