Mandy Hayes

School: Blaine

Sport: Basketball

Year: Senior

Position: Guard

What she did: Hayes averaged 16.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and played strong defense in both of Blaine’s games last week, a 42-35 win over Mount Baker and a 65-43 victory over Sedro-Woolley.

Coach’s quote: “Mandy has really come on strong in the start of league play. She has been leading us on the offensive end of the court, but has also helped pick up our defensive intensity. We were able to win our two league games this year in part by Mandy’s effort and leadership.” — Ryan Pike

Colin Hakeman

School: Sehome

Sport: Swimming

Year: Junior

Position: Distance free/back

What he did: Hakeman was a key component in the Mariners’ win last week against Lynden. The victory helped the Sehome boys’ swim team maintain its unblemished record. Hakeman won the 500 freestyle, qualifying for state, and he also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay.

Coach’s quote: “Colin is a quiet, hard worker who is really coming into his own this season. Look for him to be an important part of the Sehome championship squad.” — Don Helling
