Coach: Russell Robinson
Last year: Advanced three wrestlers to the Class 2A State Tournament and placed 33rd at Mat Classic XXVI with 17 points.
Wrestlers to watch: Spencer Wallace (sr., 126-132); Zach Wallace (sr., 145); Zach Johnson (so., 126); Jase Cooper (fr., 106)
Outlook: With the Squalicum football team’s strong postseason run, the Storm wrestling team has gotten a late start, but that hasn’t affected the number of wrestlers who’ve come out this year. Robinson said the 41 wrestlers who came out is the most he’s had. Squalicum brings back four seniors, and the best experience starts with Zach and Spencer Wallace, both of whom wrestled in last year’s Class 2A State Tournament. The Storm are a young group. Besides the four seniors, Robinson has four juniors and the rest of the roster is underclassmen. “We are really working on improving everyday and coming into the room and getting better,” Robinson said in a phone interview. “We dont want any wasted practice time, and they have bought into that.” The strength of the Storm resides in the middle to lower weights, but Robinson said the team has brought in some promising heavier weights from the football team. Johnson is another one to watch, and Robinson has high hopes for lightweight Cooper.
