Coach: Chad Parson
Last year: Finished ninth in the Class 1A Regional Tournament with 45 points, advancing two wrestlers to the 1A State Tournament. ... Placed 37th at Mat Classic XXVI with 8.5 points.
Wrestlers to watch: Taylor Gardner (sr., 170); Joseph Jefferson (so., 145); Jared Parson (jr., 160); Michael O’Bryan (so., 138)
Outlook: Coach Chad Parson attempted to describe his team several different ways before ultimatley saying this is a year for building. The Pioneers only sent two wrestlers to the state tournament last year but had some overall experience. This winter Parson will be tasked with going back to the basics and giving a team largely full of new wrestlers a strong foundation to build from. “Being that we are young, it is always a challenge to bring forth tenacity and aggressiveness,” Parson said in a phone interview, “and that is what we are working on, just bringing out that tenacity and aggressiveness.” One very bright spot in the Pioneers’ lineup will be senior three-year state participant Gardner. Parson is leaning on his leadership in the wrestling room, and Gardner will be a wrestler everyone on the team can emulate. Parson does have some promising talents, and those include Jefferson, O’Bryan and Jared Parson. Besides Garnder, Nooksack Valley’s only other senior is Alvaro Jose (182).
