Coach: Roger Goodwin
Last year: Finished fifth in Class 1A Regional Tourament with 119.5 points, advancing five wrestlers to the 1A State Tournament. ... Placed 24th at Mat Classic XXVI with 24 points.
Wrestlers to watch: JT Keeney (jr., 195); Jeremiah Cronk (jr., 145); William Casados (jr., 132); Jesus Torrero (so., 126); Braxton Shannon (jr., 220); Kole Hickey (so., 285)
Outlook: In Deming, a town with a rich history of wrestling success, seeing no seniors on a roster is a bit odd, butGoodwin, who is taking over longtime coach Ron Lepper after working with him the past seven years, said his young team is both hard working and eager to learn. The Mountaineers have three juniors and three sophomores that have varsity wrestling experience, and junior Kenney is the lone Mount Baker returning state wrestler. Outside Keeney, Goodwin is looking for strong years out of Cronk, Casados, Torrero, Shannon and Hickey. “The big thing, from my point of view, with young wrestlers is geting them to step outside the habits they’ve developed as young wrestlers,” Goodwin said in a phone interview. “We want to get them to the point where they are winning half their matches and learning how to win the other half.” Although Lepper is not coaching this season, the transition shouldn’t be too difficult with Goodwin, who said he’s looking to continue that hard-nosed Baker wrestling style that has helped elevate the Mountaineers to a state power in the past.
