Coach: Fred Pulphus
Last year: Did not place at the Class 1A Regional Tournament and did not advance any wrestlers to Mat Classic XXVI.
Wrestlers to watch: Trevin Elgersma (sr., 170); Martin Pfannenstiel (fr., 106-113); Jake Cheney (fr., 106); Dylan Sullivan (so., 285); Jackson Day (jr., 195); Dakota Edmonds (fr., 106)
Outlook: Meridian coach Fred Pulphus has been slowly developing his wrestling program, and this year the Trojans have brought in 20 wrestlers. “The team is wonderful,” Pulphus said in a phone interview. “The last two years they’ve been working together, and they are all really familiar with each other. We’re hoping they can take the next step and start developing, but they are all pretty young.” The most seasoned wrestler Meridian has is senior captain Elgersma. He was a regional participant last winter, but Pulphus said he should be ready to take the next step and advance to the Class 1A State Tournament. Junior Day and sophomore Sullivan give the Trojans some strength in the upper weights, and Pulphus has a group of promising freshmen talents in the 106s. Those inlcude Cheney, Edmonds and Pfannenstiel. “They are all 106, and they all push each other,” Pulphus said.
