LC girls top first ranking of the season

The first Washington State prep basketball polls of the season came out Wednesday, Dec. 10, and after a state title last year, the Lynden Christian girls will start atop the Class 1A girls’ basketball rankings.

The Lyncs, who received one first-place vote, are 3-0 on the year, gathering wins over Anacortes, Archbishop Murphy and Sedro-Woolley. LC is holding opponents to just a little over 28 points a game. Behind the Lyncs are Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) and Cashmere in the top three.

Other Whatcom County teams finding their way into the girls’ 1A rankings are No. 9 Nooksack Valley and No. 10 Blaine. The Pioneers are also 3-0 with wins over Blaine, Squalicum and Bellingham. As for Blaine, which is actually a 2A school that somehow found its way into the 1A poll, the Borderites are 0-3 to start the year as they struggle with the absence of Taylor V’Dovec.

In the girls’ 2A poll, Lynden ranked sixth, 44 points behind first-place Mark Morris, which received eight first-place votes. The Lions are 1-1 after falling to Anacortes Monday. Burlington-Edison also received votes in the 2A girls’ poll.

On the boys’ side, it was Lynden making the most noise. The Lions open the rankings at No. 2, receiving three first-place votes to Clarkston’s seven. Lynden plays its first game on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Last season, the Lions fell in overtime to Pullman in the championship game. Pullman is ranked third in the polls.

Squalicum also received nine points in the 2A poll and Sehome received two.

At the boys’ 1A level, Lynden Christian is ranked No. 4 with one first-place vote. After a season-opening loss to Anacortes, the Lyncs won two of three games during a tournament in Arizona.

Meridian also will start the year ranked in the 1A boys’ poll. The Trojans picked up 28 points to snag a No. 9 spot in the polls. Meridian is currently 5-0 after wins over Coupeville, Mount Baker, Blaine, Australia and Burlington-Edison in just a span of eight days.
