Mata twins impress in Baker win

Mount Baker’s girls’ wrestling team cruised to a 48-18 win over Mount Vernon on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Mount Baker High School.

The lightweight Mata twins (Michelle and Gabrielle) impressed coach Clyde Blockley with their two pins at weight classes 105 and 110, respectively.

“They just started out wrestling,” Blockley said in a phone interview. “They get better and better every week.”

Michelle Mata got a pin in the second round while Gabrielle Mata got a pin in the first. Older sister Jessica Mata also got a pin in the second round at the 130 class.

Mount Baker’s next match will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, in the Centralia Tournament at Centralia.
