Mount Baker, Nooksack Valley and Lynden all had strong showings at the Royal Rumble on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Nooksack Valley.
The Mountaineers, who placed second, had two girls place first in their weight class. Jessica Mata at 130 pounds and Taylor Van Brocklin at 140 pounds.
“We have a young team and a lot of young girls battled hard in their first tournament,” Mount Baker coach Clyde Blockley said in a phone interview.
The Pioneers had two first place wrestlers in their third place finish as a team. Maria Cavares at 105 lbs. and Nicol Whittern at 110 lbs.

“ I was impressed, they looked really good, it’s good to see them doing so well early in the season,” Nooksack Valley coach Michelle Dekoekkek said. “We got a lot more to learn though.”
The Lions placed fourth in the tournament as a team with Carina Martinez winning the 135 lb. championship.
Mount Baker will go against Mount Vernon next at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Mount Baker. Nooksack Valley will wrestle Sedro-Woolley at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Nooksack Valley and Lynden will face Nooksack Valley in their next match at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18 at Lynden.
