GIRLS’ WRESTLING PREVIEW: Bellingham Red Raiders

Coach: Chantell Bertollini

Last year: The co-op team finished sixth at sub-regionals. ... Sehome’s side of the co-op finished sixth at the NWC Championships. ... Squalicum, Sehome and Bellingham all went 0-5 in dual meets.

Wrestlers to watch: Lisa Hernandez (sr., 190/235); Mika Markishtum (sr., 140/145); Jasmine Cuellar (sr., 100/105); Jojo Willougby (sr., 190/235); Lizzie Schjelderup (fr., 125).

Outlook: New coach Chantell Bertollini has injected some life into Bellingham’s co-op with Squalicum and Sehome. The team had 15 wrestlers come to the first practice, but have now reached 22 girls wrestling with the team and there’s not a week that goes by that Bertollini isn’t approached by someone else looking to join. “We have a lot of fresh faces. For some, this is their first sport competing, Bertollini said in a phone interview. “But they’re all really excited about it.” Heading the team is senior Lisa Hernandez, who qualified for state last season after transferring from Lynden.
