Coach: Steve Gibb
Last year: Finished 2-5 in Northwest Conference dual meets. Placed eighth at bi-district finals. Sent one swimmer to Class 2A State Championships.
Swimmers to watch: Michael Johnson (sr., backstroke), Kyle Pritchard (sr., IM, butterfly, freestyle), Justin Hagedorn (jr., breaststroke, freestyle), Jordan Thompson (sr., sprints, breaststroke), Jon Wiley (sr., distance, freestyle, backstroke), Daniel Traina (jr., butterfly, sprints).
Outlook: The Lions may have more swimmers than last season — a total of 21 came out this year — but 12 of those are freshmen. While it’s encouraging for Gibb to have so many people come out, many of them are first-year swimmers, and Gibb has deemed it a “true rebuilding year.” Many of those freshmen are track and cross-country athletes just looking to stay in shape for the spring season. “Just learn the basics,” Gibb said in a phone interview of the team’s goal for the season. “There’s no expectations in terms of wins and losses.” Johnson was the only swimmer to qualify for state last year, and he returns to a group of upperclassmen rearing to join him at the top.
