Sixteen individiual swimmers and four relay teams from Whatcom County qualified as wild card entries to the Class 2A Girls’ Swimming State Championships, according to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s (WIAA) website.
The wild card qualifiers, announced Monday, Nov. 10, will join the 14 other individuals and six relay teams that qualified by time or by place at the Class 2A District 1 Finals on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.
Whatcom County gained the most participants in the 100 butterfly, where no area swimmers had qualified yet. Bellingham’s Chloe Steinkamp, Squalicum’s Amanda Tapparo and Sehome’s McKenna Sakamoto were selected as wild cards for that event.
Bellingham gained a pair of divers, as Chloe Roth and Sunni Sturnhagen were selected as wild cards in diving. Bellingham also added relay teams in the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. Steinkamp also qualified for the Red Raiders in the 200 IM.

Lynden will send its 200 freestyle relay team to state, its sole representative.
Squalicum added five individual entries, including Kristina DeKoster, who will be representing the Storm in both the 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Also qualifying as wild cards for the Storm were Jessica Lann (100 breaststroke), Abby VonFeldt (100 backstroke) and Tapparo in the 100 butterfly.
Sehome added seven individual entries, led by Ava Baumgarten, who qualified in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Joining Baumgarten as the Mariners’ wild cards were Megan Mundell (100 freestyle), Hannah Holmgren (100 freestyle), Leah Day (50 free), Sophie Grambo (50 free) and Sakamoto in the 100 butterfly.
The Class 2A State Girls’ Swimming Prelims begin at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. The finals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the same venue.
