Blaine stole the first set from defending Class 2A state champions Burlington-Edison, but couldn’t pull off the upset in a 3-1 Northwest Conference loss on Monday, Oct. 27, at Blaine.
The Borderites (4-9, 2-9 NWC) won a marathon first set 28-26, but lost the next three 25-22, 25-17, 25-13.
They were led by Mikayla Deming’s 11 kills and 18 digs. Elle Moore added seven kills, 25 digs and three aces, and Nicole Ortega had 23 digs.
“The girls are improving. They played really well, we just couldn’t sustain the momentum from that first set,” Blaine coach Bryan Clausen said in a phone interview. “I was pleased with the girls’ progress from last year. They blocked well with great defense. We had 25 blocks, but Burlington covered 21 of them.”
