Ferndale’s Maxwell Jeffrey took two losses at the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament on Monday, Oct. 27, at Jackson High School, ending his postseason run and bring to an end the season for the Golden Eagles’ boys’ tennis team.
Jeffrey lost to Meadowdale’s Bret Matysik 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, and 6-2, 6-4 to Edmonds-Woodway’s Grayson Turley in the consolation first round.
“Maxwell definitely competed, especially in the second match,” Ferndale coach Rudy Vendiola said in a phone interview. “He came close to stretching it to three sets. It took him a while to get into his rhythm, because it’s always tough going to a tournament having not played anyone else there. He made adjustments and improved.”
Jeffrey was the only Golden Eagle to advance out of last week’s 3A Wesco North Division tournament.

Vendiola was impressed with his team’s improvement over the course of the season, though, saying, “If you look at our record we improved with each match, almost each set even, as a team.”
