Sunnia Sternhagen led all Whatcom County divers with a 312.75 to take fourth place overall at the Northwest Conference diving meet on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Fidalgo Pool.
Archbishop Murphy’s three divers swept the top three, led by overall winner Rielly Krueger’s 381.35. If divers score 320 with 11 different dives they qualify for state, Bellingham coach Rhonda Flatz-Stouder said in a phone interview.
Of Sunnia’s high finish, Flatz-Stouder said, “If your degree of difficulty is pretty high you might score 25-30 points on a dive. Sunnia actually scored 40 points on her front double. She was pretty solid and just nailed it. The last dive she did a front one and a half with a half twist, which we hadn’t successfully done yet.”
Bellingham’s Chloe Roth rounded out the top five with a 226.25. Squalicum’s Amber Caron had a 256.95, and Sehome’s Maya Helms scored 177.00. Rounding out Sehome’s trio was Kinsey Hjelseth (131.93) and Stephanie Kirker (53.45). Flatz-Stouder serves as coach for all three schools’ dive teams.
