In a rematch from the semifinal round of the 2A boys’ tennis district championships, Sehome tennis player Max Shmotolokha was able to get a bit of revenge on teammate Brady Anderson.
Anderson defeated Shmotolokha in the semifinals, but lost in the championship match to set up a rematch with Shmotolokha for second place.
Though it was just a two-set match, it lasted for two hours, Sehome coach Bonna Giller said. Shmotolokha was able to come out on top with a 6-4, 7-5 win.
“Max just won some points at critical times that made the difference,” Giller said in a phone interview. “I just sat there and let them battle it out like I do at practice. It was a typical, epic battle between the two of them. Brady battled, I thought he played really well. It’s tough for one of them to lose, but we hope to get a third seed in March.”

Shmotolokha locked up a spot at the State Tournament in March, but the Mariners will have to wait to find out if the district gets three seeds for Anderson’s fate to be decided.
In doubles action, Squalicum’s Drew Segren and Kevin Smiley defeated Bellingham’s Logan Schilder and Nate Pearsall in another marathon match for second place.
The Storm duo was able to come back from a 6-4 loss in the first set to defeat the Red Raider team 6-3, 7-5 and clinch a spot at state. Like Anderson, Schilder and Pearsall will have to wait to find out if they advance to state.
“We played really tough at the end,” Squalicum coach Joe O’Brien said in a phone interview. “They maintained composure and knew their strategies were sound.”
With the Squalicum win, Sehome and Bellingham were forced into a sharing of the district team title with 18 points each. Shorecrest, which won singles and doubles titles, took third with 17 points.
“I know Bellingham won the regular season, and we came into the tournament thinking we’re No. 2,” Giller said. “Nine guys stepped up and played well to score enough points to be part of the championship. We did get a little help from Squalicum.”
