Ferndale sophomore boys’ tennis player Maxwell Jeffery advanced to the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament with a strong finish to the WESCO North Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Skagit Valley College.
Jeffery defeated Stanwood’s Henry Jennings in the second consolation round to open play on Saturday. After a 6-1 first-set win for Jeffery, he stumbled a bit in the second set losing 7-5. He would go on to take the deciding third set 6-3.
“He wasn’t aggressive in the second set,” Ferndale coach Rudy Vendiola said in a phone interview. “He needs to be aggressive, that’s when he plays his best tennis.”
Jeffery then rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Oak Harbor’s Jackson Wezeman to take third place in the tournament.

“Maxwell is hitting his stride, those were two critical wins today,” Vendiola said. “I think he has a great attitude about competing.”
