Ferndale’s and Burlington-Edison’s volleyball teams fought for every point in a 3-2 Tigers victory on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Ferndale.
Ferndale dropped the first set 25-23, then took the next two 26-24, 25-17 before losing the final two 25-12, 15-12.
“We were definitely ready to play Burlington, our preparation was there,” Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle said in a phone interview. “We just came out slow. We let them go on runs and couldn’t grab the momentum back our way. We lost focus in the fourth game and I attribute that to our youth and inexperience. That’s something we need to work on before the postseason.”
Whitney Walker led the Golden Eagles with 14 kills, Rose Compton added 11 and Abby Reid had 21 digs. Reid drew her coach’s praise for her hustle and attitude.

“I attribute how close it was to Abby,” Hoelzle said. “She worked hard for every single point and had more digs than my libero. She’s the most positive team player we have.”
Ferndale will look to get back on track on Thursday, Oct. 16, at home against Meridian.
