Sehome tops Meridian in close battle

The Sehome volleyball team remains unbeaten on the year after defeating Meridian in straight sets on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Meridian in a Northwest Conference matchup.

Despite not taking a set, the Trojans battled the Mariners tough in the first set, falling 25-20 and really testing Sehome. The final two sets were 25-12, 25-13.

“The girls played really great. They were scrappy, digging balls. They had so many digs in that set,” Meridian coach Shannon Claeys said in a phone interview. “It was really close, back-and-fourth.”

Sehome was led by Dani Johnson’s 13 kills and 11 aces. Natalie Knops added 19 digs, and Emily Greer also had 15.

Meridian was led by Alexia Bernardy’s 16 digs, five kills and two aces. Ellie Dennis added four kills and 14 digs, as well.

Sehome (9-0, NWC 7-0) hosts Blaine on Tuesday, Oct. 14, while Meridian (0-8, 0-6) plays host to Bellingham the same day.
