Storm strong in win over Ferndale

Drew Segren maintained his undefeated start to the boys’ tennis season as he led Squalicum to a 6-1 victory on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Squalicum in a Northwest Conference matchup.

Segren defeated Maxwell Jeffery 6-0, 6-2 for his seventh win of the season, Squalicum coach Joe O’Brien said.

“I was real impressed with Drew. He continues to play really good, smart, defensive tennis,” O’Brien said in a phone interview. “He’s been keeping the ball in play really well. He’s undefeated and has played really well. He has a tendency to bring out the best in himself and the worst in his opponent.”

The Storm were led by Cole Herdman and Luke Reinschmidt in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Kevin Rietveld and Jacob Sorenson. Liam Brownlie and Carter Nickelson also notched a doubles win for Squalicum, defeating Dylan Silves and Curtis Matson 6-3, 6-0.

“Liam and Carter played real well today, too,” O’Brien said. “They had a good, strong outing. I was pleased to see Cole and Luke come back and hit a little stronger in the second and third sets, as well.”

Ferndale got its only win at No. 3 doubles, when Colby Sullivan and Joshua Usery topped Will Johnson and Jared Rapp 6-3, 6-2.

Following Segren in singles wins for the Storm were Kevin Smiley, Neal Crawford and George Ashley. Smiley and Crawford needed three sets to win, while Ashley won in two close sets 6-4, 6-4.

Squalicum will look for another win at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Anacortes. Ferndale plays next at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at home against Sedro-Woolley.
