Blaine’s volleyball team overcame a strong effort by Meridian to take a 3-2 Northwest Conference victory on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Meridian.
The Borderites took the first set 25-23, then lost the next two 25-18, 25-21, before taking set four 25-15 to set up a fifth set. Blaine had to push for a few extra points, but got the win, 17-15.
“It was pretty much a back-and-forth match the whole way through,” Meridian coach Shannon Claeys said in a phone interview. “After losing the first one pretty close we came back and played so well. We had a bit of a letdown in the fourth I think because we got a bit tentative and tried to tip balls over the net instead of being aggressive and swinging. In the fifth set we came back strong, but just got tentative again toward the end. They played their hearts out and left it all on the court.”
Blaine was led by Mikayla Deming’s 14 kills and six blocks. Elle Moore added 10 kills and 24 digs, and Nicole Ortega had 17 digs.
