Ferndale boys’ tennis plays close matches, but falls 5-2 to Burlington-Edison

Nearly every one of Ferndale’s matches were close, but the Golden Eagles’ boys’ tennis team suffered a 5-2 Northwest Conference loss to Burlington-Edison on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Ferndale.

The Golden Eagles’ No. 1 singles player, Maxwell Jeffrey, earned 7-5, 7-5 win over Burlington Edison’s Kris Nilsen, and Ferndale’s doubles pairing of Kobe Sullivan and Joshua Usery won 7-6, 6-0.

“Overall as a team, you could see it in the score, we really picked our level up in the second sets across the board,” Ferndale coach Rudy Vendiola said in a phone interview. “The matches themselves were really close.”

Vendiola said he was pleased with Sullivan’s and Usery’s ability to hold on to win their first set before winning their second set 6-0.

The Golden Eagles (2-5, 2-5 NWC) face Squalicum next at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Squalicum.
