Lynden Lions girls’ swimming preview

Coach: Linda Bode

Last year: 3-5 overall, 3-4 NWC (fifth place). ... Wins last year came against Burlington-Edison, Sedro-Woolley and Ferndale. Finished ninth at the Class 2A Northwest District meet. ... Sarah Hollander was the Lions’ lone individual participant at the state finals, finishing 15th in the 100 backstroke. ... 400 freestyle relay team of Shelby Umbaugh, Annie Uribe, Shelby DeWaard and Hollander placed 22nd in state prelims.

Swimmers to watch: Shelby DeWaard (Jr.), Annie Uribe (Jr.), Jayden Elias (Jr.), Damara Gerbrand (Fr.).

Outlook: The Lions, while not boasting a roster as talented as some in the Northwest Conference, do have a stable of solid swimmers with state experience. That’s a bonus for Bode, who will look to continue Lynden’s run of being a competitive program. “You know, we’re solid. ...,” Bode said in a phone interview. “I lost quite a few swimmers, but got three or four experienced ones that hopefully will help bring up the younger ones.” Of that experienced group, DeWaard and Uribe competed in the 400 freestyle relay team that made it to the state prelims. “She (DeWaard) looks to be starting where she left off last year. She looks like she could be stronger,” Bode said. As for Uribe? “I kind of put her all over,” Bode said. “She’s a very versatile swimmer.” Elias and Gerbrand also provide some depth to Bode’s rotation, allowing Lynden’s younger swimmers a group of veterans to learn from.
