Though Bellingham easily beat Burlington-Edison 7-0 in their Northwest Conference boys’ tennis season opener Friday, Sept. 12, Lucas Irwin and Garrett Walker had to work for their No. 3 doubles victory.
The duo had to come back to beat the Tigers’ Blake Browning and Blair Dykstra 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
“Three very close sets,” Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said. “Very exciting. I was proud of Lucas and Garrett to pull it out.”
Chronister said Charlie Carmichael also had to work more than the score showed for his 6-3, 6-1 No. 2 singles win, as he won a number of long rallies and close points. Chronister also said Logan Schilder and Nate Pearsall looked sharp in their 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Bellingham returns to the courts Saturday, Sept. 13, when it will face Shorewood and Shorecrest in the Sehome Invitational on the courts at Western Washington University. Action is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
