Squalicum Storm boys’ cross country preview

Coach: Katrina Henry

Last year: Won a Northwest Conference Championship. Finished second at the Class 2A District 1/2 meet. Placed second at the Class 2A State Championships, and had two runners place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Chais Sugden (sr.); Dylan Tomberlin (sr.)

Others to watch: Ian Tomberlin (so.); Curt Peila (so.)

Outlook: The Storm graduated a large portion of its Class 2A state team, including Chris Fredlund and Nick Gallaher, who were two of the strongest Northwest Conference runners last year. But Squalicum didn’t lose all the pieces to last fall’s second-place team. Sugden, who won an 800-meter state title competing in track and field last spring, and senior Dylan Tomberlin, are back. The duo givesHenry a pair of talented runners who can help bring along the rest of the group. “Both Chais and Tomberlin are team captains on the guys’ side, and they have been doing an excellent job with the newcomers and the young freshman boys,” Henry said in a phone interview. Ian Tomberlin and Curt Peila are two others expected to make an impact on the varsity squad, and Henry said she’s anxious to see the rest of her team perform as races get underway.
