Mount Baker Mountaineers boys’ cross country preview

Coach: Tyler Mitchell

Last year: Finished ninth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed 10th at the Class 1A Tri-District meet. Had two runners qualify for the Class 1A State Championships.

Returning state participants: None

Others to watch: Mitchell Pelzer (so.); Jesse Phan (sr.); Caleb Forbes (fr.); Kennan Gray (so.)

Outlook: The Mountaineers have taken a big hit with their senior losses, including the two runners who qualified for the Class 1A State Championships last fall, but Mitchell has some runners he feels could emerge. Pelzer is Mount Baker’s top returner, and Phan, who had a strong track and field season last spring, could be a major contributor. “I’m working them hard this season, and if they can stick with it, their hard work should pay off,” Mitchell said in a phone interview. Underclassmen Gray and Forbes are two other runners Mitchell believes have the type of talent to make a strong impact. “We have a couple returners, but generally we are a young boys’ team this year,” Mitchell said. Mount Baker has 26 runners out between the boys’ and girls’ teams, and 10 of those are boys’ runners.
