Meridian Trojans boys’ cross country preview

Coach: Mike Holz

Last year: Finished third at the Northwest Conference Championships. Won a Class 1A Tri-District title. Placed third at the Class 1A State Championships, and had two runners place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Collin Magnusson (sr.); Derek Morrow (sr.); Derek Holz (so.); Rico Martinez (jr.); Levi Morrow (sr.)

Others to watch: Brendon Ross (sr.); McKay Ross (so.); Chandler Hodge (sr.); Kent Zander (jr.); Riley Hawkins-Hecock (sr.); Preston Sandland (jr.)

Outlook: The Trojans return five state runners off a team that placed third in Class 1A, but despite a wealth of returning talent, coach Mike Holz knows the journey to where Meridian reached last fall won’t be an easy one. “The goal is to get back to the state meet and bring home another trophy, try our best and improve ourselves,” Holz said in a phone interview. Leading the group is Magnusson, who placed sixth at state last season. Morrow, Derek Holz, Martinez and Morrow also return from the state group, and their coach said there are a number of other runners he’s looking at to contribute this season. Hawkins-Hecock, a senior, is a prime example of someone who’s worked hard in the offseason and should contribute this fall because of it, Mike said.
