Ferndale Golden Eagles boys’ cross country preview

Coach: Nick Carlson

Last year: Finished seventh at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed eighth at the Class 3A District Northwest District meet. Qualified one runner for the Class 3A State Championships.

Returning state participants: Roberto Aguilera (jr.)

Others to watch: Matthew Steiber (jr.); Wesley Cruse (sr.); Zach Sulak (so.); Cole Bergquist (fr.); Noah Gillespie (fr.); AJ Rankin (fr.); Finnegan Boyd (fr.)

Outlook: Carlson is excited for what his boys’ team can do this fall, and it’s for good reason. He has over 20 boys out this year. With the combination of talented returners and newcomers, there should be a lot of competition for varsity spots. “We have a few guys locked in, but in the bottom three or four, those guys are going to be close,” Carlson said in a phone interview. “I think that will push the whole team for high team scores throughout the season.” Top runner Aguilera, who placed 69th at the Class 3A State Championships last fall, returns and looks healthy and ready to go, Carlson said. The coach also is excited for other returners and a crop of freshmen that include Bergquist, Gillespie, Rankin and Boyd. Cruse, Sulak and Steiber each give the Golden Eagles important running experience.
