Blaine Borderites boys’ cross country preview

Coach: Carey Bacon

Last year: Finished 13th at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed 17th at the Class 1A tri-district meet. Qualified one runner for the Class 1A State Championships.

Returning state participants: Parker Morris (jr.)

Others to watch: Greg Arps (jr.); Charlie Baldwin (sr.)

Outlook: The Borderites have 16 runners this fall, and leading the group is Class 1A state participant Parker Morris, who placed 54th. Bacon said Morris has put in work during the summer that he believes will pay off for the junior down the road. Bacon knows the bump to Class 2A will increase Blaine’s competition level, but the move is something the Borderites are not backing down from. “The competition is going to be really great,” Bacon said in a phone interview,” and I don’t mind that. It won’t be easy for us.” Blaine has two other upperclassmen — returning junior Greg Arps and first-time senior runner Charlie Baldwin — who could post strong times. Bacon said Baldwin is a good athlete. “Patience is going to be important,” Bacon said. “They need to be aware that results will show over time, and it’s not going to be an instant gratification thing. That’s what I’ve been preaching right now at practice.”
