Bellingham Red Raiders boys’ cross country preview

Coach: Bill McClement

Last year: Finished sixth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed seventh at the Class 2A District 1/2 meet. Had one runner qualify for Class 2A State Championships.

Returning state participants: None

Others to watch: Jonah Short-Miller (sr.); Jacob Taylor (sr.); Addi Wolfson (jr.); Jackson Zerba (so.); Andrew Twedt (jr.); Nick Leishman (so.); Cade Brown (fr.); Scott Leischner (fr.); Simeon Murphy (fr.); Ty Veldhuisen (fr.)

Outlook: There’s plenty of reason for McClement to be optimistic both for this season and future seasons as well, and it begins with a combination of strong leadership and a large crop of up-and-coming runners. “It’s a young team,” McClement said in a phone interview, “and with the combination of developing freshman and sophomores, it could make things pretty good over time.” The Red Raiders don’t return any state runners, but McClement has been thrilled with the leadership seniors Short-Miller and Taylor and junior Wolfson have provided. Combine those leaders with the likes Zerba (so.), Twedt (jr.) and Leishman (so.), and a strong foundation exists for Bellingham’s boys’ cross country. Scott Leischner, Murphy, Brown and Veldhuisen are each part of a large nine-runner freshman class McClement said he is encouraged about.
