Five girls’ cross country runners to watch

Emily

Pittis

School: Sehome

Year: Senior

Outlook: Pittis has earned two state titles and a second-place finish during her illustrious running career. Surely the Sehome standout will be looking to guide the Mariners to another team title while adding a third individual title to her personal trophy case.

Ellie

Rowan-Arnett

School: Sehome

Year: Sophomore

Outlook: Rowan-Arnett, who placed third during last year’s Class 2A State Championships, is ultra talented and a key piece to the Mariners’ title defense. Look for her to be near the front of every pack this fall.

Leah

Veldhuisen

School: Bellingham

Year: Senior

Outlook: Veldhuisen, who earned a 17th-place finish during the Class 2A State Championships last season, is the Red Raiders’ top returning runner. She helped Bellingham put together a tremendous season a year ago and will be relied again to help the team.

Amy

Murphy

School: Nooksack Valley

Year: Junior

Outlook: Murphy turned in a strong season last fall, earning a 10th-place finish during the Class 1A State Championships. With another year of experience, expect the Nooksack Valley junior to contend for a top-five spot this time around.

Mimi

Meggison

School: Meridian

Year: Junior

Outlook: Meggison is one of four Trojans returning with state-running experience. She placed 19th during last year’s state meet, and if Meridian can fill out the back end of its lineup, the Trojans could be in for another strong season.
