Sehome Mariners girls’ cross country preview

Coach: Kevin Ryan

Last year: Won a Northwest Conference Championship. Won a Class 2A District 1/2 meet title. Won a Class 2A state title and had four runners finish in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Emily Pittis (sr.); Ellie Rowan-Arnett (so.); Jessa Clark (sr.); Aili Emory (jr.); Dana Ringler (jr.)

Others to watch: Maya Smith (so.); Kate Rose (so.); Abby Johnson (so.)

Outlook: The Mariners enter this fall as the reigning Class 2A state champions, and despite a few losses, the team appears again to have reloaded with a wealth of young talent. “We are a very strong team,” Ryan said. “Going into the season, I wouldn’t be surprised if every single girl (on the Mariners’ state team) is capable of being on the podium by the end of the year.” Still, Ryan knows results don’t play out on paper, and the Mariners have to come together as a team and take care of their bodies if they wish to repeat. Headlining Sehome is standout Pittis, who won back-to-back state titles her freshman and sophomore yeasr before placing second as a junior. Rowan-Arnett, who took third last year, returns and so do Clark, Emory and Ringler. Also vying for varsity spots will be a trio of talented sophomores that include Smith, Rose and Johnson. “The mantra we have on both sides is if we do things right, it doesn’t matter who the top seven are,” Ryan said. “If we are on top of the podium, everyone is responsible for that.”
