Nooksack Valley girls’ cross country preview

Coach: Collin Buckley

Last year: Finished eighth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed seventh at the Class 1A Tri-District meet. Qualified one runner, who placed in the top 20, for the Class 1A State Meet

Returning state participants: Amy Murphy (jr.)

Others to watch: Pearl Morris (jr.)

Outlook: The Nooksack Valley girls’ cross country team had only three runners competing during the first meet of the year on Wednesday, Sept. 10,, but two of the three finished in the top half of the field. The Pioneers are led by returning state standout Murphy, who placed 10th during the Class 1A State Championships last fall. She finished the race in 19 minutes, 23.91 seconds and will undoubtedly be looking to improve on that time this season. Morris gives Nooksack Valley a second strong runner. Morris finished the season-opening meet at Lake Padden Park in 22nd place out of 61 runners. Michaela Yonkman, Alyce Harlan, Anne Schoenell, Annika Rauch, Emily Parson, Jessica Jose and Maria Cazares also are listed on the Pioneers’ roster, which should give Nooksack Valley enough runners to fill out a varsity lineup.
