Mount Baker Mountaineers girls’ cross country preview

Coach: Tyler Mitchell

Last year: Finished fourth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Won a Class 1A Tri-District title. Placed fifth at the Class 1A State Championships, and had one runner place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Katie Buss (sr.); Haley Rollins (so.); Katherine Dunford (jr.)

Others to watch: Natalie Smith (jr.); Lily Hunter (sr.)

Outlook: The Mountaineers have graduated the top two pieces to their fifth-place Class 1A State Championship and Tri-District title winning team, and Kelsie Nern and Chynna Phan are big losses. That doesn’t mean, to Mitchell, that the duo is irreplaceable. “We graduated quite a few senior girls, and they will be missed, but I think girls will step up to the plate this season, and they will do well,” Mitchell said in a phone interview. Mount Baker brings back three state participants in Buss, Dunford and Rollins. Each will be counted on to provide leadership and help Baker reach the positions it got to last fall. Standout junior wrestler Smith is out for cross country, and Mitchell beleives her competitive fire will be very useful to the group. “I think with Natalie, Katie and Katherine leading the way, we will do well,” Mitchell said.
