Meridian Trojans girls’ cross country preview

Coach: Mike Holz

Last year: Finished fifth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed third at the Class 1A Tri-District meet. Placed seventh at the Class 1A State Championships, and had two runners place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Mimi Meggison (jr.); Dena Andrushenko (so.); Tiana Pratt (sr.); Madison Holz (sr.)

Others to watch: Elianna Ryan (sr.); Ashley Vandentop (fr.); Katie Edmonds (sr.)

Outlook: Like the boys’ team, the Meridian girls put together a strong season in 2013, placing seventh in state. Also like the boys, the girls return a number of talented runners from a year ago. Those include Meggison, Andrushenko, Pratt and Holz. “Coming together as a team and fighting for each other when you are racing,” said coach Mike Holz in a phone interview, when asked what he’s been preaching to his team. “We are just looking for improvement throughout the season.” Meridian’s four seniors — Pratt, Madison, Ryan and Edmonds — give the Trojans a veteran-heavy squad, and the team’s experience should help in a talent-rich Class 1A Northwest Conference. “I’m really excited about our teams,” Mike said. “Their work ethic is amazing. At practice their energy helps each other out. For me as a coach, that is the first step and racing will come as we move through the season.”
