Lynden Lions girls’ cross country preview

Coach: Kevin Richins

Last year: Finished 12th at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed 10th at the Class 2A District 1/2 meet.

Returning state participants: None

Others to watch: Morgan Nims (sr.); Amanda Cunningham (fr.); Kornelija Houston (fr.)

Outlook: While the Lynden girls’ cross country team has only six or seven girls out this fall, Richins is already seeing improvement in the runners he’s been working with. “As they gain more experience and more understanding of how to push themselves, they will see more success,” Richins said in a phone interview. “But already they are noticing improvement from the beginning of the season.” Besides his own coaching, Richins will be relying on the leadership of Nims, who is the Lions’ only returning runner. Richins raved about the impact Nims has made with the younger girls, teaching race strategy and how to prepare pre- and post-race. Richins also has been impressed with freshmen runners Cunningham and Houston.
