Blaine Borderites girls’ cross country preview

Coach: Carey Bacon

Last year: Two runners competed, but did not qualify for a team score at the Northwest Conference Championships. Four runners competed in the Class 1A tri-district meet.

Returning state participants: None

Others to watch: Hillary Kiele (sr.); Sophia Dwyer (fr.)

Outlook: Taking the glass-half-full approach, the Borderites’ numbers are up from last year. The unfortunate news is that number hasn’t increased by much, and Blaine is moving from Class 1A to 2A this fall. “It’s been an enthusiastic and a fun bunch to work with,” Bacon said in a phone interview. “We are small, which has kind of been the situation here in Blaine.” The Borderites have six girls, and Bacon will lean heavily on Kiele to guide the team, especially the younger runners. “She is really a phenomenal leader and has done so much as a captain and has really filled out that role,” Bacon said. An up-and-comer Bacon is excited to see this season is Dwyer, who had a strong middle school career. Bacon beleives after a year of seasoning she can make an impact at the varsity level.
