Bellingham Red Raiders girls’ cross country preview

Coach: Bill McClement

Last year: Finished second at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed second at the Class 2A District 1/2 meet. Placed second at the Class 2A State Championships, and had one runner place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Leah Veldhuisen (sr.); Abby Walker (sr.); Madeline Prentiss (so.); Julia Latimer (sr.)

Others to watch: Makayla Stahl (jr.); Lizzie Hanks (so.); Haleh Mawson (so.); Jaycie Roth (so.); Quincy Gale (fr.); Rosie Thompson (fr.); Zoe Thompson (fr.)

Outlook: The Red Raiders are coming off a tremendous season, finishing second in Class 2A, and fortunately Bellingham returns several key pieces from a season ago. Seniors Veldhuisen, Walker and Latimer are back, as is sophomore Prentiss. They can be counted on to help bring along some of Bellingham’s younger talent that will fill out the back end of the lineup. “The girls are familiar with the patterns and behaviors that go with achievement, and that is a big part of the craft,” McClement said of his returning state participants during a phone interview. The Red Raiders have more girls than boys out this season, and other girls who should contend for spots five through seven include Stahl, Hanks, Mawson, Roth, Gale, Thompson and Thompson. “I think the key is to be relaxed and consistent in their training and to always improve their racing,” McClement said.
